As costs continue rising and aging populations require ever more care, balancing efficiency and patient-centricity becomes more pressing and more challenging than ever. The doctor-patient relationship has been the first casualty in this overburdened system. This is often attributed to electronic medical record burdens and overbooked schedules that limit time spent with patients. However, starting at a renowned medical facility in Japan, Ubie offers a different future thanks to its AI-based medical interview system. The clinic’s president published a study on Ubie’s impact in the Japanese Journal of Headache, highlighting the transformative impact it had on his clinic and – most importantly – his patients.
Overview: Ubie in the clinic
The clinic, in collaboration with Ubie, introduced an AI clinical interview system at the headache outpatient unit. The primary goal was to address the time constraints associated with medical interviews while enhancing the overall patient experience.
The study was led by two neurologists and involved patients aged 13-80, of which 48 were male and 116 female. During their first visits to the clinic, patients answered Ubie’s AI-personalized questionnaire before meeting with their physicians, who then corroborated their answers on Ubie's provider interface that seamlessly integrated with electronic medical records.
The results were striking. The initial average interview time (10.26±1.63 minutes) was reduced by over half (3.54±1.46 minutes) when using Ubie’s AI system. This substantial time-saving led to improved doctor-patient interactions and time spent discussing the patient’s path forward, thereby quelling patient complaints that physicians spent more time entering information on their computers than speaking to the patients.
Transforming Workflow Efficiency and Enhancing Quality Care with Ubie
Diving deeper, Ubie’s comprehensive and cutting-edge approach transforms the entire workflow for doctors. By asking patients to document their symptoms prior to their appointment and scanning the patient's medication history including information on generic and brand name drugs, Ubie's system enhances the outpatient headache interview process. By capturing more data outside of short clinical interviews, Ubie streamlines clinical workflows, while also screening for things overburdened providers can easily miss. With automated features handling routine patient medical history and symptom questionnaires that can be performed prior to the appointment, healthcare providers can shift their focus back to the essence of healthcare: delivering quality face-to-face patient care in a mutually beneficial scenario.
Ubie in the US: Enhancing Patient-Centered Care and the Doctor-Patient Relationship
In the United States particularly, there has been growing concern surrounding the deteriorating doctor-patient relationship. Ubie's intervention emerges as a beacon of hope for patients and providers alike, encouraging continuity of care and a deeper patient-physician relationship. By automating the initial patient interview, Ubie allows doctors to redirect their energy where it matters most – towards meaningful patient interactions.
In the evolving landscape of healthcare, where time constraints often hinder the establishment of robust connections, Ubie becomes a catalyst for change. With administrative burdens lifted, doctors can dedicate more time to actively listen to patients, understand their concerns, and collaboratively decide on the best course of action.
In other words, Ubie’s impact extends beyond efficiency – far more importantly, Ubie restores and strengthens the bond between doctors and their patients. Spending more time connecting with patients builds trust, fosters engagement, improves patient satisfaction, and reduces provider burnout, all of which ultimately lead to better patient outcomes.
Together with our provider and industry partners, Ubie is building a world where technology revitalizes healthcare’s humanity and every patient gets the best possible care personalized to their situation.
